Installing a regular pet door through garage doors or walls breaks the fire barrier and is against fire codes. Homeowners who want their pets to have access to the garage may not realize that there are building codes with regards to garages that don't apply to the rest of the home. Even a small cat door installed through a wood door to a garage that isn't fire rated can invalidate an insurance claim. Due to storage of vehicles and tools, gasoline and chemical storage, garages are frequent sources of ignition for house fires and the codes were designed to protect property and lives. Underwriters Laboratory certified this fire rated doggy door to protect you and yours.

The garage side cover is always in the up position. In the event of a fire the fusible link breaks, releasing the cover over the pet door. Seals on the frame will melt and create a smoke proof barrier. The UL certification is for 20 minutes of exposure to fire. They come in small and large sizes for use with pets as small as cats and large enough to fit most Shepherds and Labradors up to around 95 pounds.
